WI pancake race and coffee morning raise funds for the scouts

5:51pm Tuesday 16th February 2010

Bere Regis

Despite a wet morning, there were plenty of contestants, and an excellent crowd of supporters to raise funds for the Bere Regis scout group at the coffee morning.

Winners of three pancake races were all members of one family - mum Donna Moore, and her two sons, Alex Moore and Louis Moore.

Organiser Sally Cheeseman thanked everyone who had contributed to the morning in any way, and said how grateful she was to everyone for supporting the event on such a wet day.

A total profit of £157 was made for scout group funds.

This parish council, sometimes in conjunction with others, has maintained continued pressure on the county council about concerns with the road for a number of years. This has included speeding, obscured signs, dangerous bridges and heavy goods traffic. All those at the meeting expressed frustration at the relative lack of progress made by the county council. Additional action was discussed which could include the formation of a separate interest group made up of residents to add further weight to the arguments.

Members learnt that the proposed weight and width restriction which would restrict goods vehicles using the B3390 was making steady if slow progress.

It is possible that it could come in to effect in conjunction with the opening of the Weymouth relief road.

Members also learnt that the B3390 through Affpuddle would be closed on March 1 for two weeks to allow reconstruction and resurfacing. Full details, including diversions, can be found on dorsetforyou.com by selecting transport and streets, roads and pavements, and then roadworks.

The parish council meeting was attended by officers from the county council to update members on the illegal travellers' site at Sares Wood. There was to be a meeting between the county council, the Forestry Commission and representatives of the owners of Tilhill Forest to discuss the legal process to close the camp. It was explained that this could be a lengthy and complicated process.

Members discussed measures to prevent this happening again. This included applying to declassify the highway that the travellers camp on to a bridleway. This would enable more effective barriers to vehicles being put in place.

Over recent weeks, the parish council has conducted a survey on residents' views about the need for a bus shelter, and, if needed, its preferred location. The survey highlighted the need for a bus to serve the areas of Waddock Cross and Pallington Heath, particularly to and from Dorchester on market days and these views were passed on to our county councillor.

There was a strong response to the survey and whilst not all bus users needed a shelter, the majority of respondents supported the need for some form of shelter, with the preferred location being somewhere between Briantspuddle crossroads and the war memorial.

The March meeting of the Parish Council will discuss potential designs and more specific location.

The Parish Council also expressed its thanks to all those who took part in the survey.

The meeting received details of a letter received by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) about child protection. The NSPCC is raising awareness of its helpline, a free 24 hour service that offers support and advice, either by telephone or email, to any adult worried about a child.

If anybody is interested in helping to raise awareness of this valuable service, they should email helplinesupporter@nspcc.org.uk with YES in the subject line.

Full minutes of the meeting and agendas will be on the parish website when completed and the next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Wednesday 10 March, 2010 at 7pm.
