AT A recent event at the Old School Village Hall, Sue Virgin presented an illustrated talk on Upwey in the last 50 years.

Amongst those attending were several people who remembered so well their years here – at school, shopping, working and taking part in various village activities.

There aren’t a lot of truly local people still living in Upwey, but for those who were able to come to the evening, it gave a lovely opportunity to refresh their memories and the chat level ran high.

Sue has published two books on the recent history of Upwey and Broadwey, well-illustrated and compiled from conversations with local people. Contact her on 01305 267759 or email sue.virgin@gmail.com.

  • COREhealth, a fitness regime, has opened at the Memorial Hall on Thursday mornings from 11am to midday.

Patrick Harries, the principal instructor, invites people of any age or level of fitness to join in the ‘body maintenance’ classes which are based on Chi Kung, a regime which teaches controlled movement, breathing and posture.

Activities are tailored to suit participants’ mobility and individual situations and there are still a few places available: you can join at any time, the courses are run throughout the year, just turn up.

Patrick is also hoping to get a new class of beginners’ Tai Chi started on Thursdays, also at the Memorial Hall, from 9.30am-10.30am, but this regime does require full mobility and those with impairment would probably be happier with the body maintenance class.

  • ON THURSDAY, March 12, at 7.30pm, the Upwey Society is holding its AGM at the Old School Village Hall.

We do hope that as many members as possible will come and hear the reports of the doings of this active local amenity group and enjoy meeting with friends over wine and nice nibbles after the meeting.

  • AND on the following evening, also at the Old School, Jan and Patrick Kimball-Smith are running the annual quiz night to raise funds for St Laurence Church – not the windows appeal this time, just to support general running costs.

It’s always a good fun event, some challenging questions and some for those of us whose memories occasionally let us down, themed to the date.

Along with a two-course supper, the tickets are £6, contact Patrick and Jan on 812662 and bring some friends to make up tables of four and six.
