Upwey

  • OUR Craft Fair last week has been voted an outstanding success and thanks for that are due to a great deal of hard work by the organisers and the stewards.

There was an immense array of fine exhibits displayed by our talented local arts and crafts people, and it was especially good to welcome several new exhibitors this year.

As always, the quilt attracted a lot of attention and raffle ticket sales for this were brisk. The winner was a local lady to whom the quilt will be delivered shortly and we do congratulate her on choosing the winning ticket.

Proceeds from the craft fair will add to the village hall funds, which, hopefully, will make the provision of good disabled access possible sooner rather than later. The pathway along the side of the hall is difficult to negotiate and we look forward to being able to welcome more users more easily.

  • THE next exhibition at the Old School is running now until Saturday, August 8, 10am-5pm each day.

Kate Wyatt and Gemma Wootten display a wonderful collection of paintings and models with wild animals as their theme.

  • UPWEY, Broadwey and District WI have been enjoying a very busy summer with outings to Haskins and to Tiverton, which included a river trip, in addition to their normal meeting.

July’s meeting began in the wholly traditional way with the members singing Jerusalem , enjoying a cream tea, taking part in the competition to identify unusual objects, celebrating birthdays with lovely bouquets and hearing news and views around the area.

Amongst these Mrs Knight informed members that there is a newly opened epilepsy clinic locally – GP surgeries should have details.

The ladies don’t have a formal meeting in August, but they are all looking forward to a cream tea at the home of president, Mrs Marion Jeffery.

Thursday, September 10, sees the start of the autumn season when the speaker will be Mr R G Allwood on autumn and winter colour, there will be a raffle and the competition will be for a small flower arrangement.

New members are always welcome, and if you feel you would like to join your local WI contact the secretary, Mrs Annie Edwards on 813137. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at 2.30pm at the Memorial Hall in Victoria Avenue.

  • UPWEY has just received an email from a resident of Upwey in Australia inviting us to take part by SKYPE in a quiz being run in that village to raise funds for their kindergarten. What fun! Of course we shall do our best to join in.

If there’s anyone who would like to take part in this event on Saturday, August 8, please contact Mike Goodman on 815935 who is sorting out timings (rather early in the morning) and venue, and we want some intriguing quiz questions for the team at Upwey Downunder. Modern technology is a wonderful thing.

  • ST LAURENCE’S windows are coming on nicely. Seven of the 28 have now been restored by expert Jon Callan and the fund to cover the costs is growing gently: it stands now at about £50,000 – still a little way to go.

The concert given by the Hardye School singers and solo instrumentalists recently, raised a tidy sum and gave immense pleasure to the many people who came to hear them and we do thank them for their superb performance.

  • THE next event is a Summer Supper, and it will be delicious, at Island Garden nursery, by invitation of proprietor Janet Willment, on Friday, August 14, 7.30 for 8pm.

Tickets, in advance only, are available from Island Garden or from Clive Redmayne on 814691, costing £10. Please bring your own wine and glasses.
