THE venue for Upwey’s spectacular bonfire and firework display has had a small change – the entrance is still at the bottom of Elwell Street and will be in the field where the Midsummer Fete was held, in the grounds of Upwey House.

Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Silver for the use of the field and to the ever-generous Foot family farmers for creating the bonfire.

Where would Upwey be without them?

We shall light the fire at 6pm and the fireworks start around 6.30pm.

There will be hot dogs and Jackie’s delicious ginger muffins and spiced apple ones too, to keep you going.

We’re keeping the charges to £3 for adults and £1 for children as last year and we’re looking forward to another great night – just a thought, do see that your animals are safe if you live near by.

A VERY IMPORTANT first anniversary is about to be celebrated.

The Broadwey Village Stores will be one year old next week and Peter and Janet Blakey are inviting you to a party on Saturday, November 7 at the shop.

There’s to be some wines to taste and good things to buy, they keep an amazing variety of groceries, deli, cards and things, newspapers and magazines and all sorts.

When the post office was taken away, the Blakeys were forbidden to sell stamps for a year. Now there are stamps on sale again so, as Christmas isn’t that far away, it’s a good idea to buy those extra stamps for cards early.

Peter and Janet rely on us to keep the show on the road and would like to know from all of us if there’s anything we would like them to stock that isn’t there at the moment.

They’ll look forward to seeing all their customers, old and new, at the shop at any time, and especially for their birthday celebrations.

26 MEMBERS of the Upwey and Broadwey WI attended the October meeting and were entertained by Mrs Buckler-Gale who spoke about the sale of a village.

In 1958 a Dorset village was sold by its owners leaving the residents having to find new homes or move away whilst strangers came in.

Just about everyone in the village was affected by this sale but some were able to stay on and continue to work as they had done.

What an extraordinary story and one which is difficult to comprehend, and this happened not so long ago. Everyone listening to the speaker was moved.

The next meeting will be at the Memorial Hall on Thursday, November 12, 2.30pm and the speaker will be recalling the excitements of a voyage to Antarctica.
