Crowds of people visit Local History Exhibition

• CROWDS of people with Upwey and Broadwey connections turned up at the recent Local History Exhibition at the Memorial Hall.

As before, Sue Virgin displayed her superb collection of memorabilia – newspaper cuttings, school photos, home and business documents, team lists and photos and masses of personal notes of bygone events in Upwey and Broadwey.

We listened to the look-at-thises, the oh-my-goodnesses and do-you-remembers as visitors found photos of themselves, their school and neighbourhood friends, their grannies and granddads, teachers, delivery boys, the shops and services, the streets and their own homes. Wartime memories were there and the special events to celebrate the good times.

• THERE were delights also at the Old School Village Hall when the West Country Embroiderers held their exhibition and sale recently.

They are a very happy group, the embroiderers, as they work with varying materials creating traditional and modern designs in glorious colours.

• ST LAURENCE Church Christmas Bazaar was remarkably well-attended considering the cold weather. The hot soup went down especially well.

Proceeds to Church funds amounted to over £800.

• THE GALLERY BY THE WEY opened with a wonderful display of pictures and artefacts of all sorts created by many different artists both local and from further afield.

What a great addition to that attractive corner of Upwey, next to the Wishing Well we now have – a very welcome conversion of the hideous old concrete toilet block which stood there unused for so many years. Many congratulations to Paul and Gee Sutton, their architect and builders, and good luck.

• WITH luck the Dorchester Road Relief Road will be open before Christmas when Upwey and Broadwey will become destinations, rather than just places to pass through on your way to Dorchester. We and all users of the route will celebrate.

• CELEBRATE Christmas, too, at St Laurence Church, Upwey. The traditional candlelight Carol service will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday, December 21t and the Christingle service for children will be on Wednesday, December 22 at 6pm.
