THE best good news this week has to be the opening of the new road, which has caused a remarkable peacefulness in Upwey – we heard someone say that she could not sleep for the quietness of the road! She’ll probably get over it.

THERE’S still time to buy tickets for the concert ‘A Celebration of Summer’ being held at St Laurence Church, Upwey on Thursday, July 16 at 6pm. The Thomas Hardy School Singers are an outstanding choir with a very wide range of music to suit all tastes. Choirmaster, Peter Oakes has designed a programme of instrumental and choral pieces reflecting the last year and it will be a delight.

UPWEY’S Midsummer Fete brought crowds of people to enjoy a really delightful afternoon, full of all the sorts of things such an event should traditionally provide – and the sun shone throughout with sufficient breeze to keep us all comfortable.

ON Saturday, June 20th, from 12.00 midday to 5.00pm, you’ll be able to find everything you always thought goes to make a traditional English summer party. There will be stalls of all sorts, the tea tent with refreshments throughout the day including a Pimms bar, raffle and a superb tombola. There are things to do as well – skittles, tug-of-war, bouncy castle and children’s games, cup cake decorating and flower arranging; and, by popular request, another visit from those racing terriers .

The OLD School Village Hall has some beautiful new curtains! Floor length, or almost, they’re a soft green which enhances the creamy walls and beige floor, and most certainly they will make a much-needed difference to the acoustics. We’re very pleased with them, the gift of the Upwey Society, and lots of nice remarks have been heard.

WHERE the pools are bright and deep, Where the grey trout lies asleep, Up the river and over the lee, That's the way for Billy and me. So goes James Hogg's poem, 'A Boy's Song' and the theme from which Maggie Cooke has designed this year's well-dressing: a look back to gentler quieter times, The mood has been well caught in the two panels which are hung within the well building, made from twigs, leaves, grasses and wools to paint a nostalgic picture.
