Church join Gwen in celebrating her 90th birthday


A VERY special service was held at Lanehouse Methodist Church on the first Sunday after Christmas.

It was led by Gwen Taylor, who celebrated her 90th Birthday on Boxing day.

Lanehouse church is a special place for her, holding many treasured memories, as she was one of its founder members.

Gwen has now retired as a Lay Preacher at the church but came back to Lanehouse specially for this memorable event.

Members were pleased to welcome friends from Chickerell Methodist Church, where Gwen now worships.

They presented Gwen with a flowering plant and cards to mark the occasion and enjoyed a celebration cake made by Jean Charlton.

  • SECOND Chance Furniture held a Christmas party for supporters and volunteer helpers at its premises in Lynch Lane.

A splendid buffet was provided and Father Christmas made a brief appearance too.

ANGELA White has managed to get a place in this year’s London Marathon and will be running in aid of Weldmar this time.

She is holding a series of coffee mornings to raise money towards this, the first of which raised nearly £120.

The next will be held on Wednesday, February 3, from 1 am to noon in Angela’s home.

INSPIRED by the success of the first reunion held for the girls and boys of the 1930’s from the Westham area a second reunion is to be held at the Victoria Inn, Knights in the Bottom, Chickerell, on Saturday, January 16, at 7pm.

Entrance is by ticket only, priced £5 which includes the buffet. These can be ordered by from Stan Groves, by telephoning 01305 789849.

  • ART Space is a new art group recently formed in Westham, meeting in Milton Hall, rear of Westham Methodist Church, Milton Road (off Newstead Road), Westham.

People of all ages and abilities are invited to join.

The aim is to provide a regular social creative time for anyone who enjoys painting and sketching, all for the cost of £1 per person.

You can sketch from the still life provided or work on your own project.

Please bring your own art materials.

Under 16s must be supervised by at least one adult.

The first meeting is on Friday, January 8, and every Friday thereafter from 1pm to 3pm. Refreshments will be available.

  • MESSY church is a new initiative that seeks to draw families in the community together by sharing a meal, fun and games.

It was initially set up in Portsmouth by Lucy Moore,who is a performer and creative arts director who also has background in teaching languages. She is also a published writer.

Each ‘messy church’ becomes unique to the area it is set up in.

A team from the Methodist church here in Weymouth has now launched one at Westham Methodist church/Milton Hall in Newstead./Milton Rd.

It takes place every third Tuesday from 3.30pm to 6pm.

  • BRIGHT Sparks baby and toddler group is another new group at Westham Methodist church.

This was launched on Wednesday, December 2, the first session including a visit from Eli from the Echo. Everyone had a lovely time dancing to the music.

The group meets every Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm during term time.
