School hall packed for Ladies Night

• LADIES Night at Wyke Junior School proved as popular as ever and was very well supported.

The hall was packed from the start and as predicted there were queues for some of the attractions. The wise came early!

The event raised £485 for the school funds.

• THE Caring Ladies of Wyke were thrilled with the number of people who turned up for their Winter Warmers lunch when they raised over £500 for the mental health charity Combat Stress.

Around 70 lunches were served.

If you missed out on the delicious home made soup this time round you may like to highlight Thursday, March 18 on your calendar when the Wyke WI Spring Fayre will be taking place at lunchtime in the WI Hall, Gallwey Road.

You can also enjoy a winter warmer then. Crafts and cakes will be on sale too. All are welcome.

• AT THE last meeting of Friends of Wyke Gardens it was decided to inspect a second hand notice board that has been offered free of charge with a view to renovating it rather than using funds to purchase a new one.

Suggestions for an affordable and maintainable focal point in the gardens are needed as funding for the previously suggested water feature is unlikely to be forthcoming in present economic climate.

Several new benches have been acquired and the Parks Department have installed these, as well as reinstating slabs.

Volunteers have begun making a bog garden for which old logs are needed.

Planned events for later in the year include an Easter Egg hunt, a Chalk Day and a Teddy Bear Storytime.

Donations of plants, cuttings and seedlings may be needed for planting out this year for the summer bedding areas.

• COME and learn about ‘growing your own’ at Wyke Horticultural Society’s final social evening of the winter. Chris Smith who is co-owner of a nursery near Shepton Mallet will be speaking on ‘The Edible Garden: Heritage Vegetables’ at the society’s headquarters in Rylands Lane on Monday, March 15.

Doors open at 7pm for 7.30 start. Non members are also welcome.

• THE Travelling Trends Fashion Show recently staged by the Society for the Protection of Markham and Little Francis raised just under £250 for the campaign to protect the Town Green.
