HISTORIES and memories of the lives of Portland people, the island landscape and its stone will feature in a new community project being run by Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust.

Films of these subjects are being made at the Drill Hall in Easton Lane and the trust's previous video footage, taken over 25 years, recording island stories both factual and anecdotal will be included in the project to combine with the new video recordings and sound extracts.

The trust is piecing together a record of the island's history of stone and memories in this project which is being supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Still photographs are being incorporated in the film and recent contributions of photographs by Geoffrey Tewkesbury have made vivid connections between the past and present.

Mr Stewkesbury's collection includes photos of people, landscape and stone.

People already involved are from Weymouth Cine Club, Royal Manor Arts College, Weymouth College, Carlton Road, Southill Centre and individual volunteers and a showing of the films and an exhibition of portrait photographs will be held in March.

Paul Crabtree, the trust's development director, said: "Anyone who would like to be a part of the project, can contact me or Hannah Sofaer at the Drill Hall. Ring 01305 826736 for information.

"This project will add to the archive at the Drill Hall and if anyone wants to bring in photographs they can be scanned quickly at high quality with printed copies given in return. Video footage can also be copied."
