King needs response for top-two crunch

PORTLAND assistant manager Brendan King has insisted that his players "know what is expected of them" ahead of tomorrow's top-of-the-table clash at Grove Corner (3pm).

King blasted his Dorset Premier League leaders after Monday's 2-2 draw at Hamworthy Recreation for being unprofessional and is now expecting a response against a Gillingham side that currently sit four points behind them in second spot with a game in hand.

He said: "I was disappointed with the performance at Hamworthy and in the end we were lucky to get a point. We spoke about it after the game and again in training and the players have now been told in no uncertain terms what is expected of them.

"Several players went out drinking the night before and a few others were off their games and you cannot afford to have that situation at any level if you want to win things.

"The players know they owe the club one now and they certainly do not need to be told just how important tomorrow's game is.

"We are fighting on three fronts. We are top of the league, in the final of the Dorset Senior Cup and in the semi-finals of the Dorset Premier Cup and opportunities like this do not come along very often.

"It is what all the hard work we have put in since pre-season has been done for and it is important that we don't let things slip.

"Ninety per cent of our lads have never won anything at senior level and they have got to realise just how great a position they are in. No one remembers runners-up and once you win something it is on paper forever. That is what we want to do at the club, to win things and keep progressing."

Since losing 3-2 against Portland at Hardings Lane on October 15, the Gills have produced an unbeaten run of 15 league games in which they have recorded 14 wins.

King, whose side have not lost in their last 28 in all competitions, added: "The game has got all the ingredients for a cracker and one only hopes it lives up to it.

"I have been doing my homework and they are quite a big, strong side but they might lack a bit of pace at the back which is something we will look to exploit.

"They have a French lad called Loic Herouard who is very talented but can be temperamental and their player-manager is ex-Yeovil Town forward Adrian Foster.

"Although he is not as quick as he used to be he has tremendous experience and clever movement so we will have to be wary of him.

"They also have Ian Williamson as well who can also be a major threat so we know they can hurt us but we are looking forward to it.

"These are the types of games that players want to be involved in and with it potentially being a title decider they do not come much bigger."

Adam Linaker is the only doubt for Portland. King added: "Adam has got a bruised foot but he should come through so I am expecting to have an unchanged squad."

Blues: Boyt, P Lambert, Cranny, Clarke, Walker, Litherland, Carmichael, Doidge, Lamb, Halloran, Marshallsay, White, Whyton, Linaker, Aplin.
