DANCERS presented more than £2,000 to a charity that helps children in Dorset.

Members of the Stampede Appalachian Dance Band raised the £2,158 at performances in 2007.

They have just presented the money to the Claire Lemmon Fund, which helps children with cancer and leukaemia as well as the Kingfisher Children's Ward at the Dorset County Hospital.

Stacey Whitfield and Merrill Fox, who started the group, handed the money to Claire Lemmon Fund secretary Rose Locock.

Lynn Targett, from Stampede, said: "Performing in front of an audience is great, and to raise money at the same time for such a worthy cause is the icing on the cake.

"We would like to thank everyone for being so generous."

The 12-strong group raised the money by having collecting boxes at fetes, private functions and busking sessions.

They are based in the Weymouth and Dorchester area. They perform choreographed dances on a wooden floor to live music and songs.

They play guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, accordion and double bass but also use metal tapped shoes during the dances.

The Claire Lemmon Fund helps children with cancer and leukaemia and their families. It also supports the Kingfisher Children's Ward.

The charity is aiming to send children and their families on trips to Disneyland Paris later this year.

Rose said: "Our thanks go to everyone involved with Stampede for their tremendous support.

"The donation will be of great use to help children."
