FAMILIES are being invited to step back in time and join a free guided walk along an infamous smuggler trail in Purbeck.

The two-hour route will begin in Worth Matravers and take walkers along the Smugglers' Trail - used by smugglers in the 16th century.

It is one of the most dramatic coastal walks in Dorset and will reveal sights of spectacular sea cliffs and the secret cove where the smugglers hid their barrels and stolen goods.

Guides will re-live the tales of bravery, secrecy and betrayal, and it is a great way to learn about the history of the area.

Walkers are encouraged to take part in fancy dress, and there will be prizes for the best-dressed smugglers and pirates.

The event is taking place on Sunday, June 22, from 10.30am and will take people along part of the infamous trail. For those who wish to walk the whole of the trail there will be maps available.

Fancy dress is optional but suitable walking footwear is advised and walkers are asked to meet at the Square and Compass pub, Worth Matravers for the 10.30am start.

Soft drinks will be supplied, but walkers may wish to bring money for lunch in the nearby Square and Compass pub.
