Someone asked us on our recent visit to Blighty how we were enjoying our early retirement, whereby I replied, ‘don’t know, too busy!!’

IT IS not really too much of an exaggeration to say that not much happens in our sleepy little hamlet of La Lauressie, and if you make that a Sunday afternoon, there is absolutely and completely nothing happening.

Yes, we are still here. This place really is the pits and we have chosen one of the least attractive parts of town to take up residence.

Well we finally did it, we left Wadi Halfa. It wasn't long before we were doubting the wisdom of setting off along a desert track in the dark in a double decker bus.

My next stop scares the hell out of me and the flight doesn't settle my nerves. As we take off and the plane is still angled at 45 degrees climbing up to 35,000 ft, several passengers stand up including the woman in the row in front of me. She opens the overhead locker. Luckily nothing falls out as my tent poles and sleeping mat are jammed into it holding everything fast.

I think we upset the Germans. The couple were ok, Michael and his wife, it was the three chaps in the Nissan who were getting shirty.

6pm, its dark and we still apparently haven't got enough onions on the little barge. The deck is littered with collapsed people and luggage. Heads keep on popping up from the lifeboats. Why didn't we think of using them ?

Awoke to the mournful wail of Egyptian music. Well, it might be Sudanese, I'm no expert and I certainly won't be buying the album.

The Aswan to Wadi Halfa ferry should be a real luxury for the amount we have paid. We should be cruising in style down lake Nasser with a swimming pool and silk sheets on the beds in our cabin. The truth alas is that we have a patch of deck space next to the bridge and we have an 18 hour crossing to look forward to with no bed, no silk sheets and no swimming pool.

We were awoken at 1am by donkey. The electricity in Wadi Halfa had just gone off and there was obviously one poor donkey scared of the dark. This place is crawling with donkeys. There are less camels, partly due to us eating one for lunch yesterday. Not quite beef, not quite lamb, and fairly chewy. After breakfast on the boat it tasted like the finest sirloin.
