LOOKING for all the world like the cast of Dad’s Army, this evocative photograph of the Milborne St Andrew Home Guard was loaned to Looking Back by Dorchester resident Doris Baskett (nee Cross).
The photograph was taken in 1943 and shows the guard all looking very smart in their uniforms.
They are, back row from left, Dusty Miller, George Dufall, Doug Rowland, Bill Biles the undertaker, Fred Painter, Percy Rowland, Frank Carpenter and Pop Isaacs.
Middle row from left, Herbie Brown, Walt Burt, Jim Cross, Harry Stockley, Mr Backholer, George Old, Bill Perry, Shep Dufall, Burt Jackson and Jack Smith.
In the front row are, from left, Norman Carpenter, Bill Dufall, Bill Willshire, Harry Bridle, Jack Spiller of Luccham farm at Milton Abbas, Arthur Higgins landlord of the Royal Oak, Bill Cuff and Ernie Davis.
Looking Back has no other details of the Milborne St Andrew Home Guard. Does anyone remember its members and whether they saw any action during the war? Please let us know.
