WEYMOUTH Football legend Dickie Borthwick has been in touch with this official souvenir programme dating back almost 30 years.
It is from August 14, 1984, the year they won the European Cup. They came to the town with David West in the team, just two years after he had left the county town’s Avenue stadium for Anfield.
In his introduction to the match programme, the editor Stacey Legge wrote: “Two years ago Dorchester’s talented young striker David West, after much speculation, joined Liverpool Football Club, hopefully embarking on a successful playing career in higher spheres.
“Tonight he returns with his Anfield colleagues to the club where we are proud to think of him as one of our ‘products’ and we extend a warm welcome to them all.
“So much has been written before, extolling the virtues of our visitors that it is doubtful that one could justify adding anything at all, but we are naturally delighted to be give the chance to entertain them on and off the field and look forward to a memorable evening of sporting entertainment.
“May we add our congratulations to the many that Liverpool Football Club have already received on their well-deserved honours of last season, which appears to be becoming something of an annual event!
“May we also wish David West, a local lad, continued success in his footballing career. Good luck David, for this evening belongs to you – enjoy the game!”
