Too many broken hearts on beach as Donovan plays roadshow

WHEN the Olympics descend on Weymouth and Portland this summer they will be the biggest thing to hit the resort for many years.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, Weymouth also used to host the hugely-popular Radio 1 Roadshow, which toured seaside resorts during the summer months bringing top DJs and musical stars to town.
These photographs from Idris Martin show the day in the early 1990s when DJ Steve Wright – who now hosts the afternoon show on Radio 2 – came to town with Jason Donovan.
Jason was a massive star and heart-throb at the time, having risen to fame with the Australian soap neighbours, romanced co-star Kylie Minogue and sung a number of chart-topping hits.
As Idris’s images show, the beach was packed with fans who turned out to cheer on the stars.
Can anyone remember exactly what year it was and put names to the faces of the two young women caught by the camera lens – one on-stage with Steve, the other riding piggyback to get the best possible view.
