Maison Edwards hair salon turning heads

Maison Edwards Maison Edwards

ANDY Hutchings’s image of Maison Edwards hair salon (‘Photo turns heads’, Looking Back, July 17) continues to raise interest – this time from reader Daphne Doyle.

Daphne lives in Surrey and was sent the story by her cousin Tony Biles, a former Weymouth mayor.

She writes: “I am Daphne Doyle, (nee) Biles, second from the left in the front row of the picture.

“I started working for Maison Edwards in 1942 when I was 17. Later I was called up and worked in Tilley’s Garage making wingtips for seafires. After the war, I went back to Maison Edwards until I was married on August 15 1949 when I moved to Sutton in Surrey where I am still living.”

Daphne adds: “I remember most of the people in the picture but not all their names but I can add some details.”

They are: Back Row far left: the unknown boy was an apprentice.

Far Right: The unknown man did men’s hairdressing.

Front Row 6th from Left: Penny ? married Don White and was my bridesmaid. Seventh from Left was Nydia whose surname was Dowding and ninth from left was Pam who was my apprentice.

Marion Tett (second from right in the back row) married Daphne’s cousin Tony Biles and they now live in Owermoigne.
