Do you know where the Wrens are in this photo?
 |
| WHERE ARE THEY? Leading Wren Daphne Richardson, is pictured back row, second left but where on Portland are they? |
DO you recognise this Portland spot where the Wrens are assembled?
Bob Elliott of Portland shared this photograph with Looking Back on behalf of Leading Wren Daphne Richardson, who appears in the photograph in the back row, second left.
Daphne was stationed on Portland with HMS Attack between 1943 and 1944 and was here when the Americans were prior to D-Day.
Bob and his wife, who have a second home in Penrith in the Lake District, met Daphne in their local pub there.
He said: "When she found we were from Dorset, she told us she was stationed here during the war as a Wren. She used to walk to the Bill and remembers the Americans staying on Portland and the Mulberry Harbours which they shipped to France so they could land."
As for clues as to where the photo was taken, Bob said: "The only other thing I can tell you is that you can see the sea in the left hand corner and there's a building there with a tennis court."
If you know where the Wrens are standing, or can name any of the other women in the photograph, contact Nicola Rayner on 01305 830971 or email lookingback@dorsetecho.co.uk
