WITH the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (May 20 to 24) around the corner, there couldn’t be a better time to plant yourself outside and enjoy a taste of fragrant bouquets.

This year marks the sixteenth appearance at Chelsea for Laurent-Perrier, the show’s official sponsor, and Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle La Cuvee NV, France (£138, selfridges.com) has been chosen to chime with the garden’s textures and layers. A multi-vintage prestige cuvee, it is a blend of chardonnay and pinot noir from three vintage years, aged for at least six years to achieve the rich brioche character with elegance and power.

Synonymous with putting the Marlborough wine region on the map, the show’s Cloudy Bay Garden is designed to reflect the tasting notes of their herbaceous Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2013, New Zealand (£21, Sainsbury's). With notes of gooseberries, lime and grapefruit and the aroma of tropical fruits, it’s ideal for the sauvignon lover who wants a slightly drier, more citrussy style.

A giant bouquet of flowers form the centrepiece to Marks & Spencer’s brightly coloured flower beds which are graced by lavender and sunflowers on one side, and roses and carnations on the other. To celebrate the majesty of these scented blooms, try Didier Ducas Petale de Rose NV, France (£30, Marks & Spencer), a grower champagne (family-owned vineyard) made by Nicholas Didier.

The colour of light pink roses, the wild strawberry nose, fresh, exquisitely fruity bubbles and the long, floral finish make this the perfect match for garden parties.

Another exhibitor highlight, The City of Cape Town, will appear in the Great Pavilion. For something wild and fragrant to match the Pavilion’s impressive sprays, Zalze Sangiovese 2012, South Africa (£6.59, The Co-operative) is earthy with morello fruit and raspberry flavours.
