ALTHOUGH the temperatures have well and truly plummeted, the clocks have gone back and daylight hours are shrinking by the day, don’t despair!
This provides the perfect excuse to huddle around the dinner table for long, cosy Sunday lunches with friends and family. Here are our picks for the perfect wine companions.
Polena Donnafugata 2010 £11.55 slurp.co.uk
A mouth-watering blend of viognier and the local and rather intriguing cataratto grape varieties coming together and producing a stunningly aromatic white. Showing floral, and stone fruit aromas which lead into rich, yet soft flavours of grapefruit and ripe peaches. A real treat served up with roast pork and crackling.
Renato Ratti Langhe Nebbiolo 2008 £13.99 M&S
Langhe is a beautiful area in northern Italy which boasts gorgeous rolling hills and both a rich gastronomic and wine heritage. On the nose, the wine is beautifully expressive and shows off the hallmark nebbiolo grape aromas of freshly picked raspberries and a slight smokey, asphalt edge. The palate is full of life and black cherry flavours, robust yet ripe tannins and a wicked flash of acidity making this a delicious pairing with either slow cooked lamb or nut roast.
Wakefield Eighty Acres Cabernet Shiraz Merlot £11.25 Sipp Wine Merchants
Next up is a new offering from famed Australian winery Wakefield and their Eighty Acres range, which is the world’s first 100% carbon neutral wine. The blend is classic aussie and led by cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and a small amount of merlot which come together to produce a juicy fruit licked red. With fresh blackberry, blueberry and blackcurrant flavours at the fore, chocolatey soft tannins melting in the background, this is a hearty red made for roast beef and Yorkshire pud.
De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2008 £19.99 down to £15.99 when you buy two or more Australian wines Majestic
From one famous aussie wine producer to perhaps the most well-known (and best?) sweet white. De Bortoli has been crafting their legendary and decadent ‘stickie’ for over 25 years now and this latest vintage is definitely no break from the mould. Produced from grapes which have been attacked by miraculous rot called botrytis which concentrates all the flavour, this decadent yet refined treat is choc-full of apricot, honey, crème caramel flavours that will provide a truly stylish match for apple pie and custard. Or simply enjoy on its own to really sign off a meal in style.
