THIS week we round up the top tipples from the antipodes that are more than worth snapping up.

Waimea Estate Pinot Gris 2009/2010 £11.99 down to £9.59 when you buy 2 or more, Majestic

A pinot gris showing substance and backbone from the Nelson region in New Zealand, showing an aromatic and perfumed nose packed full of orchard fruits and Turkish delight. A slight sweetness on the palate offsets the nectarine and peach flavours and zingy fresh acidity.

Brancott Estate Letter Series ‘B’ Sauvignon Blanc 2010 £13.59 Ocado

A classic pure and punchy Malborough sauvignon made from single vineyard grown fruit showing an expressive and herby nose which lead into ripe fruit and green pepper flavours. A slight creaminess results on the finish due to the small amount of oak fermentation which would make it a fine match with fresh seafood or mildly spiced Indian dishes.

Bellvale Pinot Noir Quercus Vineyard 2008 £19.80 jascots.co.uk

An elegant and pure Aussie pinot produced by ex-US commercial pilot John Ellis in the cool region of Gippsland, this has juicy and vibrant red fruit flavours, seamless tannins and a beautiful and classy minerality coming through on the finish.

Campbells Bobby Burns Durif 2007/2008 £14.25 weaverswines.com

Durif is a robust grape variety generally responsible for producing hefty red wines with even heftier tannins. However this example shows just how approachable it can be when made by the right people. Rich and fragrant aromas of dense blackberries, plums and sweet aniseed immediately leap from the glass. A rich, blueberry and melty chocolate-like palate then ensues with silky smooth tannins and a juicy finish making this a top red to pair with hearty meaty dishes and hard cheeses.
