TRY these top sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignons from different wine regions - perfect matched with May sunshine.

Easy to pronounce, sauvignon (saw-vee-nyon) is one of those lovely words that flows sweetly and, most importantly, one of our favourite wines to drink.

Whether you have a thirst for sauvignon blanc or cabernet sauvignon, these can stand alone or be blended and have achieved such success in certain regions that you can pretty much rely on the quality.

Both grapes have distinctive flavours and, in the hands of a good producer, will deliver the quality and drinking pleasure that makes you want to drink them time and time again.

Here are four sauvignons to leave you looking forward to the next glass.

STYLISH SAUVIGNON... its birthplace is France, but this vigorous white grape thrives in New Zealand.

1. The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Marlborough, New Zealand (£6.99, The Co-operative.) You can’t go wrong with a juicy white that marries passion fruit ripeness with zingy grapefruit and gooseberry freshness, underpinned with a herbal note and a streak of minerality. A mouth-watering example by the highly rated winemaker Brent Harris.

2. Villa Maria Reserve Wairau Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Marlborough, New Zealand (£13.99, Majestic)

One of New Zealand’s most awarded wineries, the Reserve level offers all the fabulousness you would expect, but with a concentration that’s pure genius. Awarded 91 points by American wine critic James Suckling, you can buy this wine with confidence knowing you’ll be rewarded with an elixir of aromatics, bracing herbs and a fine acidity on the grassy finish.

CLASSY CABERNETS... it’s the main grape in the greatest wines of Bordeaux and planted in vineyards across the world

1. Warwick The First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, South Africa (£10, Sainsbury’s). A ripe, generous style with appealing scents of dark chocolate, cedar and aniseed, this leading producer shows a silky, supple, elegant side of the variety with blackberries, cassis and bittersweet chocolate flavours giving depth and a soft texture.

2. Errazuriz Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Chile (£14.35, Waitrose) Complex and structured, aromas of blackberries, herbs and spice are followed by baskets of ripe black fruits with a fine acidity bringing a juicy freshness to the wine that you often find in Chilean cabernets. A terrific example from one of Chile’s finest wineries.
