FEW things tarnish the memory of an otherwise excellent meal like an unexpected addition to the bill.

Placing apparently complimentary food or drink on the diners’ table as they arrive and then charging for it is an arrogant and underhand way of boosting profits, which is why we left the Rajpoot in Dorchester after an undeniably enjoyable meal feeling more than slightly ripped-off.

On our table – as on every other table – were two sealed containers of water, one sparkling, one still. The younger members of our party finished their soft drinks and asked for something else, so the still water flagon was opened.

We thought no more about it and continued enjoying our meal until the bill arrived – complete with a £4.30 charge for the water.

Now I don’t know if it was tap water or decanted bottled water, but whatever it was,  asking for £4.30 was beyond the pale, especially as we also drank a jug of tap water which was free of charge.

It was a shame because the Rajpoot is a good restaurant. It looks smart, the staff are polite and efficient and the menu contains some unusual dishes and several vegetarian options.

Having done a demolition job on the popadoms and accompaniments we decided just to go for mains with a couple of rices and a vegetable side-dish.

As the beautifully presented feast descended into a free-for-all, with everyone sampling everyone else’s meal, I can say with confidence that the food was delicious, worth the slightly elevated prices.

All the meats were tender and plentiful, the rice dishes fragrant and the aubergine and spinach side dish creamily subtle.

It’s just a shame that the proprietors deem it appropriate to squeeze every penny out of their guests.

In short yes, if you are after an Indian meal a cut above the rest, do try the Rajpoot – just don’t drink the water.
