IF you had to judge a restaurant by its location, the Lobster Pot would be very hard to beat. Perched at the end of Portland Bill in the shadow of the historic lighthouse, the Lobster Pot is a café/restaurant popular with twitchers, ramblers and families with fantastic views across Lyme Bay and the Race.

It’s not the sort of place you can just pop into because of its remoteness but as my dining companion and I discovered recently, it’s well worth a visit.

We took a seat by the window and watched the waves crash over the rocks as we chose from an appetising menu.

Service was quick and courteous and our order was taken within five minutes of sitting down.

Our drinks, a black coffee and a pint of cider, arrived within two minutes: No hanging about at all.

We were taking advantage of the Echo’s Dine for Less promotion – which meant we could have two courses for £10.95 – and, for starters, my companion went for the crabcakes with chilli sauce and salad while I voted for the tomato and basil soup.

The crabcakes were absolutely deliciousand the same could be said for the soup, which was really thick and warming on a chilly day.

Our main courses arrived promptly.

I plumped for the spinach and ricotta cannelloni while my partner went for the home-made quiche, both with the potato salad and side salad.

Both were very tasty and filling and good value for money.
