SITUATED at the far end of Weymouth’s Granby Industrial Estate, The Marquis of Granby is not at first glance the most welcoming of places.

But rainy Monday evening hunger pangs had begun to strike so my three dining companions and I decided to give it a go.

We were surprised to find the room full of families and couples with only a few tables to spare.

The interior was traditional, dark and very wooden but a good atmosphere made it friendly and homely.

It was not as though we were desperate for a window seat offering views of Chickerell Road traffic so we focused our attention on a varied and appetising menu.

With a carvery on offer each Sunday, an ever-changing specials board and a wide choice for vegetarians we soon realised there was something for everyone.

On such a miserable day all we wanted was nice food, quick service and a reasonable bill – and that is what we got.

Service was quick and courteous and our order was taken within five minutes of sitting down.

I chose smoked spaghetti carbonara which was delicious and covered in lashings of bacon.

An entire loaf of garlic bread appeared to accompany my meal which seemed a bit excessive and a little on the tasteless side – but my tasty carbonara made up for that.

My companions were equally happy with their meals although we all agreed the portions were so large there was no room for dessert.

Meals varied around the £10 mark which we were happy to pay due to the tasty meals and good portions.

We were grateful to be leaving feeling nicely full after just one course because if we had decided to order any more we would have been left with a hefty bill.

Overall, our meal was a treat for the eyes and the stomach. We agreed that what it lacked in location and appearance it made up for in service and food quality. If quick nice pub grub is what you want then I would definitely recommend.
