When is a burger not just a burger? When it’s a Dorset Burger Company burger.

The concept of the eatery in St Mary’s Street, Weymouth is simple – ‘locally sourced produce used to create the finest quality homemade burgers’.

Well, guys – job done! It does exactly what it says on the tin.

The short review is simple – incredible food, great atmosphere, excellent service.

The DBCo is an example of a simple idea executed to perfection. As my friend put it – ‘real proper food’.

Working with producers from across Dorset, from Sherborne to Bridport and Piddletrenthide to Osmington, they do burgers, breakfasts and puddings.

The decor follows the same ‘less is more’ principal – a colour palette of grey and white with long benches and tables.

There are nice touches like an exposed metalwork clock and some iron machinery. The walls have what appear at first glance to be beetles and butterflies pinned on display but rest assured, nature lovers, they are all paper cut outs and very nice ones at that.

There’s a great atmosphere – buzzing without being intrusive, and the service is great – friendly and sincere. We went for the black and blue burger – a beef burger with Blue Vinney cheese in the middle and mushrooms on top, and the Dorset Naga – a hot experience using the Naga chilli grown in West Bexington.

There are 13 types including barbecue and Mexican varieties, bacon and cheese, pork and chicken and two vegetarian options, plus a children’s menu.

My friend was hungry even by man standards and we asked if he could have a double Naga.

The staff were lovely and obliged and the burgers came with bacon too – which we didn’t order but was a lovely surprise.

The burgers were really juicy and tasty – neither the hot chilli or the cheese overpowered the meat. Each was served on a soft white bun with coleslaw and seasoned fries.

There isn’t the biggest selection of lagers or ciders – but the large dessert menu makes up for it.

Nicely full, we decided to pass on dessert but with options including Eton mess, chocolate fudge cake and homemade cheesecake, there’s bound to be something to keep most still-hungry tummies happy.

We both agreed we would be bringing family and friends with us on our return for an education in burgers.

In short – the best burgers I have ever had.
