Waitrose (£1.99)

With a bold claim that my packet contained precisely 49 monkey nuts, you could tell this would be a quality purchase. The shells broke open with a satisfying crunch and the peanuts housed inside were packed with a rich roasted flavour. 5/5

Lidl (£1.19)

These mutant peanuts were a good size and then some, although the packet did boast of being quality tested by independent laboratories. This made the exploding shells that opened with a puff of dust rather unnerving. Still, tasty all the same and good value for money. 3/5

Sainsbury’s (£1.35)

Another large bag of nuts, although these were not roasted. You could taste the difference, as these were a rather tough and chewy. Technically still monkey nuts, but these might be thrown back at you by an angry chimp. 2/5

Asda (95p)

A nice big, heavy bag that was bursting with a bumper helping of nuts. Being the cheapest of the lot, expectations were low. Luckily, they were easy to shell with a good smoky roast flavour. 3/5

Tesco (£1.09)

A bit on the dry side with the nuts tending to slip their skins and make a break for freedom. Also a bit stingy with only half as much in the packet as the rest of the competition. If you’re going to shell out on monkey nuts, shop around to get more than this. 2/5
