9:00am Tuesday 2nd December 2008 in Tasting Tasting By Patrick Gough
Sainsbury’s Mince Pies £1.19 The pastry was short, light, buttery and superb – although maybe slightly too rich for the contents. Sadly, the mincemeat let these pies down. Not only did it contain tiny fruits, it had the overwhelming taste of cough mixture. 2/5
Asda Mince Pies 85p The pastry was truly superb – fresh tasting and short, buttery yet light and ‘melt in the mouth’. The mincemeat was also exceptional, with a classic, quality taste. Far too good to leave out for Rudolph. 5/5
Holly Lane for Aldi 89p The crumbly all-butter pastry was dusted with icing sugar – so make sure you’re not wearing dark clothes when you’re devouring these! Although the pastry had a stale texture it tasted fine. 3/5
Mr Kipling Mince Pies £1 The pastry was a little crumbly but crammed full of mince. All in all a good mince pie which would go well with a cup of tea. Gawd bless you Mr Kipling and your generous fruity portions. 3/5
Tesco Mince Pies £1.38 The brown chutney-esque mincemeat inside was good quality with a real Christmas taste. But if you’re not a fan of sweet fruitiness, these aren’t for you. 4/5
