LIVE!!; Bumper bank holiday feast of music in Weymouth

10:05am Friday 24th May 2013

By Nick Horton

THEY say all good things come in threes, as my shocked and amazed doctor told me the other day. And that’s certainly the case this bank holiday weekend with three monster live music events, plus a whole host of other tasty treats for you to enjoy.

First up, it’s the Quayside Music Festival outside the Rendezvous by the Town Bridge in Weymouth.

This two-day extravaganza kicks off on Sunday, May 26 at midday with Till There Was Uke, followed by; 1pm: Leggomen. 2pm: Lauren Bannon. 3pm: Smoking Benny Blues Band. 4pm: Mighty Leap. 5pm: Surfing Birds. 6pm: Mighty Leap. 7pm: Amy Mayes Band. 8.30pm: Flybone Yellow.

You’ll notice two sets from Mighty Leap.

They’re the six-piece reggae/ska band formerly known as Zion and the White Boys who stormed last year’s Battle of the Bands contest at the Rendezvous.

The reason for two sets?

You won’t believe how flipping brilliant they are first time round. Take my word for it and just get there, okay?

The shenanigans continue on Monday, May 27, again from midday, with Dr Badtooth, followed by: 1pm: Amy Brown. 2pm: Bit of Rough. 3pm: Decades. 4pm: Amy Mayes Acoustic. 5pm: Howling at the Moon. 6pm: Speedway Snails. 7pm: ACBBS. 8.30pm: Hustle.

There’s also the Lizard Live! all-dayer and all-nighter up on the seafront at the Lazy Lizard.

There’s live music upstairs and downstairs, starting at 6pm with Lauren Bannon, Powelly, Danny Adams and Leggomen on the ground floor, while upstairs Stereoironics, Electric Bucket, Thou Shalt Sexy and Hustle will be staying up all night to get mucky.

Also on the Sunday, May 26, it’s the Pitch on the Pitch bash at Weymouth FC’s Bob Lucas Stadium with The Dolmen, Sketchy, WOB, Skimmity Hitchers, Tia Roos and many more from 11am.

Tickets are a mere £12 available from pitchonthepitch.co.uk There’s also another all-dayer on the Sunday, May 26, at The Boot in Weymouth with Andy Grant, Gut and Steel, Amy Mayes and Leggomen forcing you to listen to great music and enjoy refreshments.

Blimey, what a time to be alive, eh?

Meanwhile, you’ll be able to hear the banjos out in bandit country at The Countryman Inn at East Knighton, where there’s yet another all-day bash featuring the always-busy Amy Mayes Band, Blue Rock, The Wurzels and The Crack.

Yes, that’s right, The Wurzels, who will no doubt be arriving for the gig in their brand new combine harvester. Tickets are £25 from the pub on 01305 852666.

And finally, those of you of a certain vintage will remember such bands as Stan The Man and Those Stumpy Giants who were regulars on the live music circuit some 20 years ago.

Well, after two decades of enforced retirement, ex-Stan and ex-Giants’ main man Nathan Adams is back gigging with his new band The Heartburns.

Nathan, the brother of Gothic Chicken’s Luke Adams and cousin of music behemoth Danny Adams, will be joining Mike Blair, Matt Hodgett and Jeremy Cuff for the band’s debut gig tonight, Friday, May 24, at their local boozer, the Black Dog in downtown Broadmayne, near Dorchester.

Good luck and welcome back!

Well, that’s it for this week.

Have a fabulous bank holiday weekend, don’t talk to strange men and don’t get lost.

Till next time...
