IT has been several decades since there was a Gilbert & Sullivan extravaganza with professionals and accomplished groups of Savoyard enthusiasts combining, but The Best of Gilbert & Sullivan Gala Concert, pictured, at Lighthouse, Poole proved that the wait was over. Bournemouth Gilbert & Sullivan Operatic Society hosted the evening and provided a dozen talented singers in four ensemble numbers plus a chorus which, with friends from societies near and far, numbered nearly 100.

Six experienced professionals were the guest soloists and Simon Butteriss also amused with many stories to enhance the entertainment. Striking the right note was the news from Society Patron John Broad that Macmillan Caring Locally, a cause close to the hearts of so many, would benefit from the concert with a substantial donation.

What a terrific opening with Ring Forth Ye Bells from The Sorcerer and from then on all the solos, duets, trios and ensembles did ring forth with great skill and enthusiasm.

The soaring soprano voice of Rebecca Bottone was perfect in Oh Happy Young Heart while the haunting My Lord a Suppliant from Ros Griffiths (wife of John Broad and also a Patron) was great.

This was followed by duets from The Mikado with Simon Butteriss, splendidly delivered by Louise Crane.

The whole show was, indeed, a great pleasure.
