ENTHUSIASTS of both gardening and heavy rock will no doubt be polishing their shovels and salivating about their collective chops over the impending delivery of Soil.

No, it’s not a lorry-load of dirt but the arrival of the US metal legends for a gig at Weymouth Pavilion on Tuesday, October 28.

Formed in their native Chicago back in 1997, the hard-rockin’ trio of Ryan McCoombs, Tim King and Adam Zadel are touring the UK with their sixth studio album Whole.

It’s very much a return to form for the band with great songs, ear-worm hooks and superb playing, the sort of material which made their debut album Scars a monster smash in 2001.

Support at the Pavilion comes from American Headcharge, Hed Pe (whatever that means) and Eight Foot Sativa which, as any keen gardeners will know, is a large flowering bush.

So, fair play to the Pavilion for running the risk of having their windows blown out in a night of extreme metal moshing and bottom end of such bowel-loosening intensity you may even Soil yourself. See what I did there?

Tickets are £17 from seetickets.com.

And talking of things American, legendary local gunslinger Danny Adams has spent the best part of this year over in the States playing, writing and touring.

“I played anywhere and everywhere that would have me,” Danny tells me.

“I travelled throughout Kentucky, Tennessee and Pennsylvania, playing at open mic nights, bars, clubs and quite a few moonshine parties around the lakes of Kentucky.

“I also managed to land a gig at the prestigious Douglas Corner Café in Nashville which is where the likes of Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bert Jansch and Bob Dylan all played back in the day.

“Amazingly, I’d travelled all that way from Weymouth and on the bill with me that was my mate Mike from Brighton!” he adds.

And you can admire Danny’s new ten-gallon Stetson and outrageous cowboy boots, as well as his set of original material and well-chosen covers, when he ties his hoss up outside the Wyke Smugglers in Weymouth this Sunday, October 12 from 12.30pm for his first gig since coming home.

Now then, you nippers who are starting out on the rock’n’roll highway to hell are invited to take part in the annual Battle of the Bands contest at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester on Friday, October 31.

Entrants must be aged between 14 and 19 (so that’s me out then) and there’s a totally ace first prize of a weekend in a top recording studio, worth about £1,000.

You’ll need to perform three songs in front of a panel of expert judges and you can get all the details at the event’s Facebook page by searching for botbsdorchester.

Right, that’s it for this week. Apparently, I’m all about the bass, no treble.

Till next time...
