IF you were to be at a loose end and happened to look up boogie woogie in the dictionary you’d read the following explanation… Good time jazz and blues piano-based rock’n’roll, as practised by the likes of Jools Holland and Ben Waters.

And if you happened to be near Stuttgart in Germany and you were experiencing your loose end episode tonight, you could pop along to the Winnend K Archer Hall and enjoy the company of both, along with Chris Jagger.

Or you could just keep your loose end going a bit longer and wait until tomorrow night, Saturday, October 25 when Ben returns to his home town of Weymouth for a mahoosive fundraising gig at the Pavilion.

As his mum and manager Ann tells me: “It’s a real thrill for Ben to be playing here, and it is for me too.

“My mum used to put on variety shows at the Pavilion and she’d be delighted to know both her grandson and great-grandson Tom (Ben’s sax player) will be treading the same boards.”

Like many other musicians, Ben is asked to perform charity concerts all the time but it’s so difficult to fit them into his busy schedule, what with tours of the UK, Germany, Finland, Singapore and Australia all coming up in the next few months.

So tomorrow night’s gig is a fundraiser for 17 local charities, including Weldmar, British Heart Foundation, Chesil Sailability and the WIll Mackaness Trust, with all proceeds going directly to them. There’s a full supporting cast with 50s/60s rockers Replay and pop/soul duo Amy Mayes and Andy Grant also on the bill.

There are only a few tickets left at £20, so do yourself, and some very worthwhile causes, a favour and pop along tomorrow night.

One of the many beneficiaries of Ben’s gig tomorrow night will be the Pavilion itself and it’s a busy week for the town’s theatre with The Elvis Years tribute show tonight and the visit of American metal monsters Soil on Tuesday, October 28.

And finally hearty congratulations to the organisers and all the bands who gave up their time and talent to raise money for the Forget Me Not charity at last Saturday’s Dolly Day event at the Centenary Club in Weymouth. The club tells me they were packed from 11am to midnight and the quite frankly amazing sum of £5,800 was raised, with more money being counted and coming in, for this incredible organisation which deals with the heartache of stillbirths.

Right, that’s it for this week I’m off to ponder the pros and cons of the S Club Seven reformation.

Till next time...
