AS Oscar Wilde once opined after a night on the black Sambuca: “I can resist everything except temptation.”

And the temptation to repeat what was billed last year as a one-off event has proved irresistible for The Kings of Oblivion, the ‘supergroup’ of south Dorset musicians who got together last Easter Sunday to celebrate the music of the late David Bowie.

At this very moment, they are taking their collective protein pills and putting their collective helmets on for Another Evening of Sound and Vision, and, once again, they’ll be raising money for Weldmar Hospicecare.

Musicians from some of the region’s most popular bands are again involved, and the personnel list reads like a Who’s Who (or indeed Who’s He?) of local musos.

On vocal duties this year are Chris Whiteside, of Big Gunz and Freezer infamy, Marc Eyre and Tony Bygrave of Freak Circus, Ian Neale of The Half Dead Darlings, Jamie Pinnow of The Dinnerladies and Margot Escargot, and Kipper from the Million Dollar Bash, and, well, Kipper.

The band ain’t half bad either, with Jamie Parker and Jack Ansell of Vanilla Radio on guitar and bass respectively, Iain Weetman of The Mighty Fine, playing it left hand, on guitar, Lucy Hackett of Dr Robert and Till There Was Uke on keys, Brian Donnelly on sax and flute, Andrew Sykes from The Dinnerladies on bass and, er, me out of The Dinnerladies and The Shakespearos, filling the drum-thumping role.

They’ll be taking on some of Bowie’s most popular and memorable songs, from his first big hit of Space Oddity, all the way through his amazing catalogue of classics - Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Young Americans, Heroes - to Lazarus, from his final album Black Star.

Last year’s event was such an overwhelmingly enjoyable and successful evening, raising more than £2,000 for Weldmar, it would be a crying shame not to repeat it.

Not only are all the musicians giving their time and immeasurable talents for free, but several local businesses have been delighted to support them, including the Wyke Smugglers, Print Shop Express, Europcar van hire, Dorchester Youth Centre and cleaning company Legg and Son.

So put on your red shoes and dance the blues this Easter Sunday, April 16, at the New Vic on Weymouth seafront.

It’s another crash course for the ravers and doors open at 7.30pm, it’s just £5 on the door, with all proceeds going to Weldmar Hospicecare, which does such fabulous work in the community supporting people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

I’ll be away next week, no doubt struggling to get into my Spiders From Mars Lycra catsuit for the Bowie Night gig, but my fragrant and glamorous colleague Joanna Davis will be looking after the gig guide, so keep sending your events in to gigs@dorsetecho.co.uk

Till next time…
