NAPALM Death are the Trigger’s broom of death metal.
After 30 years of pulverising grindcore, it’s hardly surprising there are no original members still with the outfit formed in Birmingham back in the dark days of 1981.
Musicians have come and gone but the band’s signature brand – short, fast songs, impossible tempos and unintelligible socio-political lyrics – has remained the same.
Just like The Drifters, then.
Napalm Death are in the Guinness Book of Records for the most sales of the shortest song; their one-second epic You Suffer, which managed to shift more than 150,000 units back in the happy days of vinyl.
Not only that, they now join the impressive list of metal bands to visit Weymouth, thanks to the pioneering efforts of the team at Hourglass Promotions.
They’ve pulled off yet another coup with Naplam Death, with support from the ferocious Ted Maul, Furyborne and Witch Cult, coming to the Weymouth Pavilion on Thursday, December 15.
Tickets, which go on sale tomorrow, are £15 and available from the Pavilion box office, Tattoo Magic in Weymouth and Bridport, and online at ticketweb.co.uk.
In a similar vein, Chris Lonergan, that well-known bespoke bass player of this parish, also has no original parts left. Despite this, he will be celebrating his 60th birthday this Saturday afternoon with his Bus Pass Bash at the Spa Hotel in Weymouth, from 2pm.
As you can imagine with Chris’s illustrious history in the local music scene, some of the best bands in the region will be having a right-old knees up with C Sharp Blues Band, Hamish ‘Custers’ Maxwell, Skint Imperials, Skatmandu, Broad-band and Dylan aficionados Million Dollar Bash all due to play.
Meanwhile, tomorrow night’s Bluesnight at the Dorchester Arts Centre sees an appearance from Marcus Bonfanti.
He’s a rising star in the bluesworld, having opened for Robert Cray, been nominated for best male vocals and best guitar at this year’s British Blues Awards and played at Glastonbury this summer.
Phew, not bad for a youngster. Tickets are £12 in advance, £13 on the door with concessions for OAPs and NUS from 01305 266926.
Staying in the county town, live music venues are like buses.
You wait for ages, then two come along at once.
After last week’s opener at The Apple Tree in Trinity St, Goldies makes a comeback as a music venue with top covers band The Trouser Band tomorrow night.
Right, that’s it for this week. I’m off to be the new president of FIFA...
