11:00am Friday 2nd December 2011 in Live Music and Clubs By Nick Horton
I was just thinking as I heard Elton John’s Step into Christmas for the one millionth time the other day, isn’t it time we had some new Christmas songs?
And as much as I love Slade, if I have to endure Noddy Holder yelling IT’S CHRISTMAS! in my lughole just once more, he’s coming straight off my Christmas card list.
So it’s good to hear that there will be at least one decent new song this December as Danny and The Goosemen, one of the busiest bands around at the moment, are poised to release their festive offering The Migration (I’m Coming Home). (Don’t you just love songs with brackets in?) Chief goose Danny Adams tells me: “I wrote the song on a delayed 11-hour flight back from the States earlier this year.
“I recorded the backing track within a day of landing in England and the Goosemen and I finished the lyrics a couple of weeks ago.
“It’s all about being apart from loved ones at this time of year.
“The song has a Celtic feel and we really need a choir to pull it all together.”
And this is where you come in. If you’re a singer in a band or have any vocal talent (which rules me right out) you need to get yourself and your suitably loosened larynx down to the Weymouth Baptist Church (behind Alexandra Gardens) this Sunday, December 4, at 1pm.
Danny is hoping to create a superchoir, in a Band Aid-style, to sing on the chorus of the band’s festive offering which will be available for download within the next few days.
Moving on, next Saturday, December 10 is the last of the hugely popular Bluesnights this year at the Dorchester Arts Centre.
And organiser Tom Hopkins is signing off 2011 in style with the return of The Spikedrivers.
Ben Tyzak, Constance Redgrave and Maurice McElroy will be showcasing their new live double CD Front Porch Swing and promise a mix of original and blues standards.
Tickets are £12 in advance, £13 on the door with concessions available. Booking on 01305 266926.
And finally, The Appletree is a new music venue in Dorchester and is looking for bands for next year for Friday and Saturday nights.
