Rendezvous with the Lovely Laura in Weymouth

HERE is the weather forecast for the Weymouth area for next Monday.

There will be brilliant sunshine well into the small hours, with temperatures nudging into the 80s, and a warm saxophone breeze blowing up from the Mediterranean for the night.

There is a more than likely chance of top tunes and good times, followed by outbreaks of scattered dancing and random grooviness, particularly in the Town Bridge area of the town.

The usual cold, wet December night will be replaced by conditions normally found in Ibiza in August as Balearic nightclub sax star the Lovely Laura joins the Amy Mayes Band at the Rendezvous on Monday, December 12.

Laura, originally from Bridport, now splits her time between Ibiza and the UK with her fiancé, the club DJ Ben Santiago.

She’s been a regular on the Hed Kandi club circuit across the world since her debut at the legendary Manumission back in 2000 while she was on holiday on the island.

The former Weymouth College student has played to thousands at some of the most well-known bars and clubs in the world, including Café Del Mar, Ministry of Sound and Pacha, and was invited by Howard Donald to join the Take That reunion tour in 2007 after he spotted her playing her sax in Ibiza.

Laura has currently been working with producer extraordinaire Robin Millar (Style Council, Sade, Randy Crawford et al) and is set to be part of the Jazz FM UK tour next spring.

So what brings her to Weymouth?

“Amy and I are great pals. We were at Weymouth College doing a jazz diploma together and again at Leeds College of Music so it’s always good to meet up,” Laura tells me. “And I really enjoy playing too,” she added.

Which is just as well, as she has gigs this weekend in Frankfurt and London, back to Weymouth for Monday and has just been offered gigs over Christmas in Moscow and St Petersburg. What a life, eh?
