A warm welcome for Winter
THEY'RE WELSH:
THEY'RE WELSH:

NOW that the weather is getting warmer, I'm sure you'll all be delighted to join me in welcoming the onset of Winter.

This tortuous and heavily contrived set-up refers of course to the eagerly awaited arrival of Johnny Winter (The Brook, Southampton, tonight, £5 advance/£27 at the door, tickets from 023 8055 5366, and Cheese & Grain, Frome, Saturday, £21 advance, £25 at the door, tickets from 01373 455420).

A bona-fide American blues rock legend, Johnny signed to CBS in 1969 and immediately established a territory all of his own, directly between the simmering southern rock of The Allman Brothers and the hot-valved potency of Cream and Led Zep.

Most importantly, his playing sang with authenticity, and the intervening years have seen him become an unofficial torch bearer for his heroes, championing and aiding the careers of Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. A Grammy nomination for his recent I'm A Bluesman album hasn't harmed his legendary status any, and respect has to be due to any man whose unwavering flame burns just as brightly now as it did a scarcely believable 39 years ago.

Moving along to Sunday, we welcome a new promotions company to the local scene - Locked Up Promotions, by name - whose first foray brings a bumper bundle of four bands to the area, namely Miss Conduct, Ok Pilot, Shapes and We Push Buttons (Tuatara, Weymouth, Sunday, £3).

Miss Conduct are a female-fronted pop/punk quintet hailing from Bridgend in Wales, succinctly described by Kerrang! as more fun than a bathtub full of chocolate.' Their mini-album Sinner Vs Sinned has merited a universal thumbs-up: hear the title track at www.myspace.com/missconductband Exeter pop/punk striplings Ok Pilot, meanwhile, have been touted by Rock Sound as one of their 100 bands to watch': hear just why at www.myspace.com/okpilot As regards Shapes, this fiercely animated Birmingham-based trio treat the stage like a zero gravity trampoline and describe their music not unreasonably as heavy alternative rock with awesome melodies and technicality'. Find them at www.myspace.com/weareshapes Bristol-based alternative electro rock quartet We Push Buttons round out the bill, performing what will be the first date on their current tour: Wish them well in person and at www.myspace.com/wepb Not too far away, a monumental band bash called Spring Break is taking place from 3pm at Weymouth's Lazy Lizard, featuring Fading Within Reason, Forkwits, The Reps, 8 Days Later, Dirty Sleeves, One For The Road, Aeroplane Blonde, The Chancers, Shebeen, Harry North, Si Jubb Carruthers, Jay Rees and Edward And (Lazy Lizard, Weymouth, 3pm onwards).

Later in the week, the Lazy Lizard also plays host to a very well-starred London-based five-piece called Lights.Action! (Lazy Lizard, Weymouth, Thursday).

Rapturously received appearances at the Dowload, Great Escape, Guilfest and Leeds festivals have led to the release of the band's debut mini-album, All Eyes To The Morning Sun, which was produced by Richard Wilkinson (Paul Weller, Sugababes, The Magic Numbers, Adele). Big Cheese Magazine boldly states that this bunch are going to be bigger than Facebook thanks to a charisma-packed stage show and a clutch of killer songs': hear them at www.myspace.com/lightsactionband, and lend an ear to Chichester-based alternative indie ambient disco band' support Joey Nightmare while you're in the vicinity at www.myspace.com/joeynightmare Finally, keep an eye open and an ear out for a Bournemouth-based 25-year-old specialising in south coast solo acoustic dischord' who operates under the name of Creepythinguy. Armed only with an old Spanish guitar through a dirty little valve amp', Creepythinguy is hoping to take the stage at September's End Of The Road festival and will certainly be cropping up in the interim at a small venue near you.

Comparisons with Sonic Youth, Neil Young and Hefner are well founded: hear all at www.myspace.com/ creepythinguymusic
