Richard Hosford Trio

Dorset County Museum

WHEN you have a trio made up of two world-class woodwind principals from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and a pianist who has accompanied the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, you know that the results will be excellent.

And so it was when Martinstown-based clarinettist Richard Hosford joined forces with Julie Price on bassoon and pianist Liz Burley.

In the first half we heard music by CPE Bach, Carl Jacobi and Mendelssohn.

The Introduction, Theme and Variations for bassoon, by 19th century Belgian bassoonist Carl Jacobi, was particularly impressive.

Julie Price’s well-rounded tone and virtuosity produced a memorable performance.

After the interval, Richard gave a very stylish performance of Gershwin, very ably accompanied by Elizabeth Burley.

We heard a finely phrased performance of this four movement tuneful piece, with much interplay between clarinet and bassoon. The only disappointment of the night was that we were not given an encore.

The next concert is on January 15 and will be given by pianist Ivana Gavric, who was named BBC Music Magazine Newcomer of the Year 2011.
