Jazz Goes To The Movies: Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen, Regent Centre, Christchurch

GET your silver screen memories here with Digby’s cinema swing. Veteran jazz trumpeter Digby Fairweather, in his latest tour, ranges from the Girl Crazy Gershwins to When Harry Met Sally’s I Only Have Eyes For You, paying tribute to the rich contribution that jazz music, in all its styles, has made to the history of the movies.

Digby Fairweather is backed by his top-notch six piece band, including one of the finest jazz guitarists around, Dominic Ashworth, and that flowing locks cavalier of the clarinet, Julian Marc Stringle, with vocals from Val Wiseman, hot from her own hit show celebrating Billie Holiday.

Opening with I Wish I Knew, the signature to Barry Norman’s well remembered TV Film Review – it was a fine blend of the breathless and the Blues.

The uptempo highlights included a frantic Running Wild from that classic comedy, Some Like It Hot, and the Gershwins’ S’Wonderful, and I’ve Got Rhythm, with a brilliant drum solo from Nick Millward.

Cry Me A River, and Pete Kelly’s Blues showed Val Wiseman was as good with emotion as with swing, and her jazz scat with Digby Fairweather on Hello Dolly would have had Satchmo in deep voiced admiration - Oh Yeah.
