The Rusty and Not So Rusty Musicians Orchestra: Lighthouse, Poole What a privilege! Every year the BSO - a world class orchestra by anyone’s reckoning - invites rusty musicians across Dorset to dust off their instruments, attend a series of workshops and then play a full scale concert alongside the pros.

Sunday night saw this year’s crop of rusty wannabes get their moment in the spotlight playing music by Dvorak, Mahler, Holst. Sibelius, Copland and Shostakovich.

To be honest it ranged from stylishly honed to not too far removed from fingernails on the blackboard. But that’s not the point.

At its best this concert was superb. Certainly at times it merely thumped along but it had a feel that can only be created by a joyous understanding between the wonderfully committed tutors and an array of pupils who cover a dizzying range of ages and abilities. Where it wavered there were devilishly difficult parts to play. Full marks for going for it.

Under conductors Kevin Smith and Ian Pillow and led by Kate Turnbull, this concert hit some highs that will have astonished the 160 or so musicians taking part. Many will have had no idea they could play at this level. And that is the big plus of the Rusty project, now in its eleventh year.
