That'll Be The Day, Lighthouse, Poole

NOTHING succeeds like success, as they say. And 25 years on the road with an ever-changing programme of popular music from the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies most definitely qualifies as success for this talented team. To be a sound-alike ‘tribute group’ for one band is surely demanding: to do the same for an entire musical era is little short of remarkable. And they do it so very well.

From Lonnie Donegan’s elegantly coiffed Fifties-era skiffle to the shaggy-headed Seventies with the Bay City Rollers, this show had it all – even Cliff Richard, whose music doesn’t get much of a look-in on the average radio programme.

The pace is fast and relentless as hit follows hit, accompanied by a trio of girl singers and dancers and punctuated periodically by some genuinely funny comedy interludes.

Maybe I’m age-biased, but this 30-year era produced some truly excellent performers and equally excellent music and I applaud That’ll Be The Day for continuing to bring both alive on-stage.

If you missed it this time, don’t worry. They’ll be back. And I don’t doubt that many of Saturday’s audience will be there to welcome them.
