An event of note for all guitar fans
DORSET COUNTY MUSEUM SOCIETY
Dorset County Museum, Dorchester
THE latest concert in the County Museum Music Society's season saw a programme of guitar music given by the Eden-Stell duo.
How refreshing it was to see so many young people in the audience - let's hope that the experience encourages them to attend more concerts in the future.
The duo's first half featured mainly their traditional fare of baroque and Spanish music. Perhaps it was nerves, but the first item, a transcription by Chris Stell of Bach's D minor concerto, was marred by the occasional memory lapse.
They obviously felt more secure in the Spanish repertoire, and soon we were basking in Spanish sunshine provided by Federico Moreno-Torroba's Estampas. The first half ended in the well known Danza Espanola by Manuel de Falla.
The second half featured a performance of music set to a background of photographs taken by Mark Eden of locations including The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, May Hill in Gloucestershire, Sherwood Forest, Liverpool, and Stromness in Orkney.
There was some very attractive music, but it could have benefited from being not quite so long with less chat, thus allowing the music and photographs to speak for themselves.
The concert ended in a performance of Generator by Gary Ryan, which was very much appreciated by the many guitarists present in the audience.
The society's next concert is an organ recital by Robert Quinney, sub-organist at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday, April 16 in St Mary's Church, Dorchester.
