Sam Smith has been feeling sorry for himself after a haemorrhage on his vocal cords led to him having to cancel tour dates.

But if the soulful singer is worried about the future of his voice, he can at least take some comfort that he is not alone, joining a whole list of stars who have faced similar problems.

The 22-year-old Brit joins a long line of musicians who have battled throat conditions.

The Skyfall singer, 27, had to cancel her tour in 2011 due to a haemorrhage on her vocal cords, and underwent laser microsurgery on her throat to remove a polyp.

The 67-year-old rocker shouted during an argument immediately after a two-hour performance in Florida in 2006.

Steven woke up the next morning to find he had lost his voice, and shortly afterwards was diagnosed with a ruptured blood vessel in his throat.

Aerosmith had to call off the rest of their tour while Steven had surgery.

The 22-year-old singer had to take time out from boyband The Wanted in 2013 to have surgery to repair a haemorrhaged vocal cord.

He said: “It was pretty severe, I was pretty scared for a while… it wasn’t pleasant.”

The 47-year-old singer had to call off her Las Vegas residency for a period during 2012 while she rested her voice under doctor orders, due to weakness in her vocal cords.

The 67-year-old Bat Out Of Hell singer called his 2013 live shows his farewell tour, having had surgery to remove a growth on his vocal cords.

The 79-year-old musical legend underwent surgery in 1997 to remove nodules from her vocal cords.

But the surgery went wrong, damaging the Sound Of Music star’s voice permanently, reducing her voice to that of “a fragile alto”.
