I was part of a capacity audience at St Mary’s church in Dorchester where we were treated to a wonderful evening of fine orchestral music from the Dorset Chamber Orchestra under the direction of its conductor Dr Robert Jacoby.

The programme began with Beethoven’s tuneful overture King Stephen followed by the main feature of the evening which was the brilliance of soloist Jennifer Pike, pictured right.

Jennifer won BBC Young Musician of the Year at the age of 12 in 2002 and she has since gone on to build herself an internationally acclaimed performance and recording career.

Playing on a 1708 Matteo Goffriller violin made available by the Stradivari Trust, she concluded the first half of the concert the much loved Max Bruch violin concerto.

The second half started with the orchestra playing Bizet’s sparkling symphony in C and Jennifer drew the concert to a close with her sublime and technically exquisite playing of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams.

The audience showed their appreciation by calling her back numerous times.
