WESSEX SCENES Max Gate, Dorchester

NEARLY 100 years after this drama was first performed, the New Hardy Players have brought back to life Thomas Hardy’s play which he based on his epic work The Dynasts.

This production, directed by Tim Laycock and Emma Hill, is enlivened by new scenes which focus on the original staging of the work by the Hardy Players back in 1916 which Hardy himself helped to produce.

The main action takes place in the early 19th century when Napoleon’s army is on the brink of invading Britain and battles against the French are raging at sea and on the European mainland.

The people of Dorset see British soldiers preparing for war and stories are rife about what is happening across the Channel as the local community speculate about their fate at the hands of “Boney”.

Fast forward to World War 1 where the Hardy Players, under the direction of Harry Tilley, played by Tim Laycock, cope with tragedy and army recruitment as they try to stage their play in Casterbridge while war brings change and a sudden patriotic fervour.

A large cast, augmented by singers and musicians, make a fine job of this challenging work which is produced by Andy Worth.

Excellent costumes, imaginative scenery and staging together with a dedicated and talented cast, complete with authentic Dorset accents of course, make this a memorable event that is not only hugely entertaining but also gives an interesting insight into what life was like before the 20th century communications revolution. News in those days was based on hearsay and rumour while world events took months to reach the local community, a truly different world.

Further performances take place in Dorset locations during July and September and are thoroughly recommended.
