BASED on the 1992 hit movie Sister Act, starring Whoopi Goldberg, this terrific feel-good comedy musical tells the heartwarming story of Deloris, an aspiring disco diva.

Set in 1970s Philadelphia, Deloris witnesses a murder and is ordered by the police to hide in a convent. The funky Deloris ends up transforming the traditional nuns’ choir into a group of groovy Soul Sisters.

Backed by a superb 12-piece live orchestra, a large and multi-talented cast deliver a wonderful show, supported by meticulous choreography, colourful costumes, and atmospheric lighting.

Particularly outstanding are Sally Wheeler as Deloris – with an effervescent presence and a convincing American accent, Jim Brokenshire as “sweaty”

Eddie – magically changing costume three times during the stunning I Could Be That Guy, and John Gerken as the genuinely menacing gangster Curtis.

The story touches on the thoughtprovoking religious/secular dilemma that many nuns must face, epitomised by Olivia Ling as Sister Mary Robert in the moving number The Life I Never Led, with the illuminating lyric “I’ll never go surfing”.

There is subtle humour throughout this show, especially from Tom Robinson, Paul Mathews and Neil Tallant as soulful Bee Gees in Lady In The Long Black Dress.

The real musical highlights are the ensemble numbers, with full rich vocal harmonies.

Celebrating its 60th successful year, BBLOC (Bournemouth & Boscombe Light Opera Company) delivers a show that is entertaining, impressive, and utterly professional.

Sister Act runs until Saturday with matinees Thursday and Saturday.
