SPECIAL evenings are nothing new for audiences of the remarkable Dorset Chamber Orchestra under the inspired – and inspiring – baton of their conductor Robert Jacoby, but this tribute concert in remembrance of Sir John Tavener was extra special indeed.

It included the premiere performance of one of the composer’s works, which was dedicated to and played by his younger daughter Sofia, and became an emotional experience for an audience which included members of Tavener’s family, including his widow.

The Smile of the Buddha is a short solo violin piece that resonates with enigmatic grace which typifies the composer’s sacred style. Soprano Sophie Gallagher gave a breathtaking performance of the angelic piece accompanied by the sweet sound of Sofia’s violin.

The main work of the concert was Mozart’s Symphony No 39 in E Flat and it was performed to the usual high standard we have come to expect from this excellent local orchestra.

Full of sweet sounds and stunning melodies, the symphony is justifiably an all time favourite.
