CD REVIEW – THE OVERTONES – SWEET SOUL MUSIC
THE first question this album posed was whether we need another CD of Motown covers.
But if you like Sweet Soul Music then maybe you should Give the Overtones Just A Little More Time.
These five former decorators were talent spotted while they were singing during their tea break.
Thankfully there’s something a little different here – the group’s take on tried and tested numbers offers something unique.
The Overtones’ vocal range is wider than the Grand Canyon and the arrangements, especially on the even smoother sounding Let’s Stay Together give it a fresher, younger feel.
At times though what has been added in technical volume with harmonies and falsetto in gusto, sucks a lot of the soul out of it the heartfelt numbers like Rainy Night in Georgia.
