Having witnessed an incredible performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade at last year's BSO Benevolent Concert, there was not an ounce of disappointment once again this year with pieces from Mozart, Dvořák and Tchaikovsky on the programme.

Staff and musicians donate their time and services for free at this event with proceeds directed to assist BSO musicians with health issues or difficulties that threaten their playing careers.

Tonight gave a chance to witness the incredible talent of Poole born cellist Natalie Clein as she reunited with the BSO.

Opening with Mozart's Magic Flute Overture premièred in 1791 just months before his death, this beautiful piece conjured contrasts of both birdsong and majesty.

Dvořák's Cello Concerto has been called the “greatest” of all cello concertos and how this masterpiece in 3 parts confirmed that.

In a sweeping sea green gown, Natalie Clein's performance was spine tingling. Her interpretations of the music's contours and nuances were utterly magical as she demonstrated the incredible range and emotional beauty of her instrument.

Her seamless partnership with the BSO and clear enjoyment were a joy to behold. Clein movingly dedicated her encore piece, a Catalan folk tune from the great cellist Pablo Casals, to a BSO musician currently being supported by the Benevolent fund.

Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony was first performed in St Petersburg in October 1893, just days before his death. With themes of fate, life and death, some call this Tchaikovsky's “symphony as suicide note”.

Kirill Karabits chose this piece when “trying out” the BSO and vice versa before being appointed as conductor in 200, and showed again tonight what an inspiring, dynamic leader he is of such a talented and versatile orchestra.

In four emotionally charged movements, the Symphony was enthusiastically received by the packed concert hall, so much so that rapturous applause broke out after the 3rd march-style movement.

Incorporating the delicate and quiet through to the pulsating and rousing, this Symphony has something for everyone.

The passionate finale was a fitting end to a stunning evening.

With a master like Karabits at the helm, next season looks a very exciting prospect.
