MANY of us applauded the intense, well-acted, gripping TV drama that was the first series of Broadchurch but tried to forget the somewhat confused, soapy second series ever happened.

So good was the first series that the Americans did a remake, calling it Gracepoint and substituting the cliffs and streets of West Bay and Bridport with a northern Californian coastal town.

And now it’s been released on DVD, with only David Tennant reprising his world-weary, ‘too troubled to shave’ detective role, with a somewhat wandering American accent and the stars and striped-embossed moniker of Emmett Carver to boot.

Anyone who thinks they’ve seen it all before may be surprised to hear that the ending is completely different, and a lot cleverer to boot.

The very British Olivia Colman is replaced by Anna Gunn of Breaking Bad fame, who brings a little more subtlety and distance to the role but solidifies her acting chops in that superb final episode.

Gracepoint is no more in the States now, with Fox deciding to cut the cord after some disappointing ratings of 3.5 million per episode.

So enjoy this intriguingly different but reassuringly similar homage to some of the best TV Britain has ever produced.

Of interest is the newsagent character re-incarnated as a grizzled Nick Nolte, the Australian hotel manager now turned British and the ever present whale shots between scenes - Gracepoint’s main tourist draw, we’re told.

There’s also an added backpacker character adding intrigue.

Special features include a behind the scenes look at the show and a special effects piece.

Prepare to be outraged when you find out how those West Bay cliffs were recreated.
